Product Portfolio Reengineering

METTLER TOLEDO AutoChem
Strategic consulting on architecture, design and processes
METTLER TOLEDO AutoChem provides instruments and services to enable scientists and
engineers to speed the delivery of new chemical compounds. Their hardware technology
for lab automation, reaction analysis and particle system characterization is superb.
But, AutoChem was formed through acquisition of innovative start-ups and in 2005
there was no commonality among any of the software packages related to the various
instruments offered.
eSymmetrix led the design and development of a new
software framework for AutoChem’s complete portfolio of software products.
Developed primarily in C# with some C++ for low-level and/or compute-intensive library
functions, the new software offers a unified, intuitive user interface spanning
disparate analytical technologies with high levels of interoperability and data
exchange among modules.
The simplicity of the new user interface has significantly expanded AutoChem’s market
beyond highly specialized technologists to cross the chasm to include the much larger
ranks of synthetic and analytical chemists. The commonality and interoperability
across the portfolio has created a key differentiator and competitive advantage.
High levels of component reuse and dramatic improvements to AutoChem’s development
processes across the software portfolio have also significantly increased the productivity
of the AutoChem software center and the quality of the resulting products.
With regard to software process improvements, eSymmetrix contributed significantly
to integrated the best aspects of agile methods such as Scrum while also meeting
the quality standards needed for software systems used in pharmaceutical development
(21 CFR
Part 11,
GAMP 4, etc).
Delivering competitive advantage through enhanced usability and interoperability
